Message dated 8.3.2004 to IRAS Officers from Ms. Vijayalakshmi Viswanathan Financial Commissioner (Railways)

The world around us is full of sights and scenarios, which teach us some lesson or other. We are aware that birds generally fly in “V” formation. It was an interesting revelation that in such a formation, the whole flock adds at least 70% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. The scientific explanation for such a phenomenon is that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. When the bird in the front gets tired it rotates back and is replaced by another. The birds at the rear honk to cheer up those in the front to maintain the speed.

What lessons can we draw from this common sight? Apart from the synergy effect, it also illustrates that when we have a common goal or direction and a feeling of togetherness, the ultimate destination can be reached much more faster if the team moves forward on the thrust of one another. Further, by staying in tune and united, the efforts required in reaching the goal will be much less. While it makes better sense to stay in the formation, it is equally pragmatic to take turns during strenuous tasks. Sharing the hardest problems and tasks combining our abilities, faculties, talents and resources will prove much more beneficial to the team. Finally, the cheering from behind motivates the flock to stay ahead. A timely word of encouragement always motivates, helps and strengthens. Ultimately if we make true the spirit of team work, we can rise to meet the challenges before us.

I thought of sharing this interesting piece, which I happened to read recently! Perhaps some of you might have read this earlier as I found from Mr. Sridhar, my Principal Private Secretary. Nevertheless it is worth repeating this wonderful managerial concept arising out of a daily occurrence!
