Do you believe that homing pigeons navigate with the help
of sun and stars? You do, don’t you, like many, many people all over the world?
Well, you should better be prepared to face the reality as discovered recently
by the zoologists working at Oxford University. After painstaking research,
they have come to the shattering conclusion that homing pigeons are guided by
something more mundane: roads and highways, just like their human compatriots.
What the zoologists found was that the pigeons followed major roads and then,
at junctions, they took one or the other turns to change their direction. The
response of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association to these findings was jubilant.
It said that every Saturday (which is the official pigeon racing day), you
could see flocks of pigeons flying along the major highways!
