A Desperate Investment

How much should one be prepared to pay for preventing crime? Some more taxes, perhaps. But the head of Bergen Energy Company of Sweden is ready for more, and in a different way. The offices of this company have been repeatedly burgled and valuable articles stolen. Although the gang behind this has been identified, its members are eluding arrest. The burglars have also been managing to hoodwink the costly electronic surveillance gadgets. So the company’s chief has now sent a message to the burglars through the underworld, making them an offer: If the gang is prepared to take a three month holiday abroad, the company says it will foot the bill for the grand time spent, all expenses paid. The company says it has worked out the figures and found that this would be cheaper.

We have to wait and see how the noble gesture is responded, and whether the estimated savings are realised by the company. And lastly, after three months, will it be business as usual?
