At Last, A Washing Machine Which Talks!
Siemens of Germany now claim to have the world’s
first washing machine, which talks. The machine first introduces itself as
Hermine and then proceeds to recognise complex washing commands from the
housewife. It also gives advice on clothes care in a woman’s voice. For
example, it says, “Was it you who put these jeans in the white wash?” Also,
“Look, I have told you a hundred times that clothes dry better in a tumble
dryer and washings don’t look decent in balconies!” People seem to agree that
the machine will have a particular appeal for the population of single
males—they will no more miss these feminine nitpickings. Another uncharitable
contribution is that the machine will fulfil the need for lonely housewives to
chatter away while they go about their household drudgery.
