Quo Vadis?
Names of places are sometimes very odd indeed. In
west, particularly in U.K., some places seem to get names with funny messages.
A few examples are: Misery Point, Snake’s Bight, Little Hooping Harbour,
Deadman’s Pond, Confusion Bay, Jerry’s Nose. One Mr. Arthur Pratt, a reader of
Daily Telegraph of U.K., has reported the following anecdote: -
Mr. Pratt was standing by the side of a road in Westerham, Kent, U.K.
with his back towards the road, when a passing city bus grazed his hips and
went away. Naturally indignant at this carelessness of the driver, his
immediate thought was to shoot off a letter of protest to the local newspaper,
reporting the incident. However, when he saw the destination signboard of the
bus, his indignation melted and he had to laugh out. The signboard read, “ TO
ORPINGTON VIA PRATT’S BOTTOM”!
