What happened in Brunei is perhaps representative of what happens elsewhere. Mohamed Ali bin Haji Ibrahim was arrested by customs officials for smuggling 700 cans of beer into Brunei. In court, he was fined B.Pounds 5,000/- and on hearing this, the 39-year-old smuggler broke down. He told the court that he thought of smuggling the cans of beer in order to repay the debt he had incurred two months earlier for paying an equal amount of fine imposed on him in another smuggling case in Brunei.
