If you are a burglar, you
don’t expect to be honoured, do you? Not even if you tried to burgle and
failed.
But that is what happened
to a man in Equatorial Guinea recently. Finding that his lady neighbour had
gone out, and the coast was thus clear, a burglar broke into her house and got
ready to steal her television and video. But his plans got jeopardised by the
unexpected arrival of the neighbour accompanied by a friend. Naturally, the
burglar hid himself, while the neighbour prepared a meal for herself and the
friend and laid it on the table. Imagine the burglar’s pious shock when he
observed from his hiding that, while the neighbour went out of the dining room
for a while, her friend sprinkled some dubious chemical on one of the dishes,
which the burglar identified as poison. Even burglars don’t quite like to watch
on while their neighbour is being poisoned, no matter if the neighbour is a
would-have –been victim of his burglary. So he came out of hiding and raised an
alarm. The lady neighbour rushed in the room and the friend ran away.
Hardly surprising that as
a gesture of gratitude, the neighbour allowed the burglar to keep the items he
was trying to steal.
